When purchasing nut trees usually they are a long term investment. In most circumstances nut trees can take up to 5-7 years to produce their first set of nuts. Two years ago during the bare-root season, winter, we planted our first walnut tree knowing it could be many years before we get a harvest. But to our surprise we discovered that the tree is full of walnuts! I do not have a lot of experience growing walnut trees and I’m not completely sure as to when they will be ready for harvesting. I have read in many horticultural books that once the nuts have started to fall off the branches and onto the grown they are ready to be picked. In the books it also reads that high temperatures can cause them to go ‘off’ quicker so it is recommended that they are stored in a dry place as soon as they are picked. Most nut trees require extra watering during the summer periods and perform best in soil that has plenty of organic matter. For this particular tree we have kept the watering consistent during the summer months with added mulch to keep their roots cool.
Here are a few other fruits and vegetables flourishing in the garden at the moment!
Until next time happy gardening!
